A dated back yard with minimal functionality was transformed by excavating a bank and installing several retaining walls. A large courtyard which leads out from the family room and kitchen is accommodated within this space. In built seating flanking a water feature schist wall, maximise the usable area and is the focus of the courtyard. Schist is repeated under the seating and along one wall. The upper level accommodates a lawn, retained gardens and the washing line and is accessed via a series of steps. Timber fencing and retaining is painted black to contrast with the plaster walls. Overall the planting is simple but interesting.
